Guided meditation on the Gospels of Lent

Most years our parish provides a small group Lenten experience to allow parishioners and others to meditate and reflect on the week’s Gospel story together. The format is for a group of 6 to 8 people to listen and reflect on the bible passage. People meet in our parish rooms or at a host’s home. There is also a private individual option; see below. The intention is to provide a quiet time and to listen to what the Gospel message is telling us. We use an ancient tradition called Lectio Divina. To learn more about Lectio Divina click here. Essentially, it is to provide a spiritual space to allow a word or phrase from the Gospel passage to speak to you. This can vary from person to person. Some people may wish to express why a word or passage spoke to them, others may not – both responses are equally valid and encouraged.

If you would like to learn more about participating in a reflective Lenten group for the 7 weeks of Lent, please complete the form below and we will be in contact and explain how Lenten Groups work or advise a group or location that may suit you.

Become a Leader / Facilitator

As a parishioner you may feel the call to host a group. We would encourage you to answer the call as you can gain so much from the experience and it is simple to do. We provide some guidelines and training if needed. Please indicate your desire in the form below.

How are Lenten Groups run?

Many of us have participated in Lenten groups each year and have found them to be a rewarding and enriching experience.

It is simply an opportunity to break open a Gospel reading together, to listen to a reflection, to pray and to share with one another. It is that simple and need not be confronting or uncomfortable for people. By creating a time and space to meditate for a few moments on God’s word we open ourselves to His Spirit.

It allows us to come together as God’s people to connect as a community with friends, family and fellow parishioners. We are confident that many blessings will flow from having Lenten groups meet to prepare for Easter.

Every year we are blessed in our Diocese with excellent material prepared by the Diocesan Office. This year they have again included a CD with readings and prayerful music to make the running of the group easier.

Typically, Lenten groups would run for 60 to 90 minutes each week of Lent and are hosted in our homes.  However, we will make the Parish Centre available for those who prefer this. The hospitality need only be very simple with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. It is the warmth of God’s love expressed through the Scripture and gathering as parishioners which is important.
