Sunday of the Word of God

Pope Francis’ latest Apostolic Letter ‘Aperuit Illis’ was issued in September, 2019 with the purpose of instituting the Sunday of the Word of God on the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The first celebration of this will fall on Sunday, 26th January, 2020. However, because this is Australia Day and parishes in our Diocese will be focussing on that and bushfire relief, we have decided to defer the celebration to the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time – the weekend of 1st-2nd February.

In preparation for this, all parishioners are invited to a meeting which will reflect on Pope Francis’ letter, the Bible and the Lectionary. Come along and share your favourite Scripture verse or story with us on Tuesday, 28th January from 10:30-11:30am. If interested, RSVP to the Parish Office so we know what size room is required.

The declaration to have a “Sunday of the Word of God” was made on the pope’s own initiative. Its title, “Aperuit Illis,” is based on a verse from the Gospel of St Luke, “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”

This Sunday is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God.

Pope Francis

It would be beneficial if every Christian community, on one Sunday of the liturgical year, could renew its efforts to make the Sacred Scriptures better known and more widely diffused.

Pope Frances

A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a year-long event.

Pope Francis

The Bible cannot be just the heritage of some, much less a collection of books of a privileged few. It belongs above all to those called to hear its message and to recognise themselves in its words.
