In times of ravaging emotion, a thoughtful observation from an on-looker can name what seems beyond coherent thought or speech.

The media-savvy Orthodox Jewish-American Rabbi, Shmuel (“Shmuley”) Boteach, made just such an observation during the all-too-often sensation-seeking and factional bull-ring of the ABC’s Q&A program: “I think the country is deeply traumatised by this story.” In many ways, I found Rabbi Boteach’s contribution uncommonly generous because if ever there was a faith that understands the effects of ongoing trauma, it is that of the Jewish people.
